peindre pourquoi ? (Why to paint ?)

Qu’est-ce que la peinture ?

Un moyen d’expression ?
Non.

What does it mean “ the painting” ?

- A way of expression ?

No, it’s not. Painting is a way of expression for Van Gogh or Munch and the Expressionists, e.g. This vision, finally romantic, is not mine.

- The translation, then, of a thinking or a world view ?

No more. This was the case in the Middle Ages :  to translate in pictures, available for all the people, the text of the Bible. On the walls of the Basilica of Assisi, Giotto translates the divine message, by telling about the St Francis’ life. Although having the experience of the philosophy, I don’t have any world view to offer.

- An invention, may be ?

No more. It’s Manet or Picasso, Matisse or Mondrian who invent a new way to present the world non representatively. Even though I am affected of myopia, that way is not mine.

I’m not Van Gogh, Giotto or Picasso, no more Matisse, Manet or Mondrian.

Then what ? Alberti (it was for him the main characteristic of the Renaissance) told that “a painting is a window opened on the world”. I think exactly the contrary ( but in a different meaning. I cheat a bit !). There is someting that is absolutely enjoyable to see a body, an object, a landscape arising from the white canvas on which you paint. It is as if (Aristote told the same about sculpture) the shapes were already there, hidden in the whiteness of the canevas and, with the brush and the colors, you bring them out. It’s something absolutely magic. As the revelation in the photography. First, there is nothing but black and, gradually developing into the bath, a picture take shape. It’s the reason why I paint from photographs (that is a way increasingly used by the figurative painters since the end of the abstract painting). To repeat manually what happens chemically in the photographic processing method.

So, for me, the painting, specifically  my painting, is not covered by the definition of the terms “expression”, “translation” or “invention”, but rather by the definition of “revelation”.

This for the form. But, what about the content ?

I’m interested by the people but the people are not a source of fascination for me. Some landscapes fascinate me : the Grand Canyon, the Death Valley, the romantic landscapes particularly. But you would have to be Caspar David Friedrich or Turner ! What is fascinating for me is the city. The characters we can fortuitously meet, the circulation that characterizes it, the advertisement that animates it. And for me, the most interesting city is Los Angeles

Why Los Angeles ?

First because it’s a decor. It’s the city of the cinema. Hollywood. In fact more than a decor, it’s the main character of numerous movies and novels. Despite the fragmentation of the communities, despite the incredible scope of this urban monster, L.A. is a city, it has a soul. Different of the soul of San Francisco, more intellectual, or the soul of New York which is more focused on the business. Los Angeles is the city where the most important thing is the appearance. A city eminently photogenic, for this reason (and also of course its light so particular).

Next, because it’s the American West. In Santa Monica, the most famous beach of Los Angeles, ends the mythic Route 66. It’s the city of all the dreams of succes, and also  of all illusions. On the real city which is far from a paradise, specially for the minorities living there, there is an imaginary city which represents today the dream of the pioneers of yesterday.

I want to paint that ambiguity. Painting after painting.
